About : The History and Activities of SV NIT Surat

The Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology, Surat also known as NIT Surat or shortly SVNIT, is an autonomous engineering and technology oriented institute of higher education established by the Government of India in 1961.

The institute offers Undergraduate, Postgraduate & Doctoral courses in field of Engineering & Technology, Science, Humanities & Management.

The campus is located about 265 kilometres north of Mumbai. The campus is situated near Ichchhanath in the city of of Surat . The campus is spread over 265 acres (1 km2) of lush green forest. The campus is residence to about 5000 inhabitants which includes 210 faculty members and approximately 3,500 students living on the campus hostels.

Department and Admission

The college has six departments for the six main engineering disciplines, namely,
1. Electronics engineering,
2. Electrical engineering,
3. Computer engineering,
4. Mechanical engineering,
5. Chemical engineering and
6. Civil engineering.

Apart from these, it also has Departments for Applied Physics, Applied Chemistry, Applied Mathematics, Humanities and Applied Mechanics.

The departments of Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering have been rated 'A' by the National Board of Accreditation.

Extracurricular activities

The institute organizes annual cultural and technical festivals : MindBend (Technical Festival), Sparsh (Social & Cultural Festival) & Autumnfest (Automotive-Management Festival) that attract participants from all over the country and abroad.

Hostel and Infrastructure

SVNIT currently has 11 hostels - 9 for boys and 2 for girls. Each Hostel has got own mess, TV room and Common Computer facility. With rise in admissions, new hostels with almost four times the capacity of the existing ones are being constructed.

Most of the institute's athletic & sports facilities are located in and around the Student Activity Center (SAC). The SAC itself includes 2 world-class indoor Badminton courts and a fully equipped Gymnasium. Adjoining this building are two Basketball courts, a Cricket ground and Football ground. Other facilities on campus include Volleyball court, Pool tables and indoor Table-Tennis tables in the residential hostels. Additionally, girls hostel also houses a gym and a badminton court exclusively for girls.
