About : The History of NIT Trichy

The National Institute of Technology (formerly known as Regional Engineering College, REC) Tiruchirappalli was started as a joint and co-operative venture of the Government of India and the Government of Tamil Nadu in 1964. Because of this rich experience, this institution was granted Deemed University Status with the approval of the UGC/AICTE and Govt. of India in the year 2003 and renamed as National Institute of Technology.

NIT Trichy offers Under Graduate Courses in 10 branches and Post Graduate Courses in 21 disciplines of Science, Engineering & Technology besides Ph.D. in all the departments.

The campus, all of 800 acres, has good facilities catering to the academic and extra curricular interests of the students. The Octagon is the pride of the campus equipped with modern facilities like a CAD/CAM Lab, Local Area Network, an 10 Mbps High Speed Internet connection and other seminar and conference facilites.

NIT-T hosts two inter collegiate fests namely Festember (Cultural) and Pragyan (Techinical) and an inter department fest namely NITTfest (Cultural) annually. These fests draw students from most colleges of South India and are hugely popular.

Academics

The institution, at present, offers as many as ten Under-graduate and twenty three Post-graduate programmes, M.S.(by research) in all Engineering departments and Ph.D. programmes in all departments. The Institute has excellent faculty, well - equipped laboratories with facilities for advanced study and research and a modern Central Library.

The college is a deemed University meaning the degrees can be awarded by the college itself.

With over two thousand Undergraduate students, thousand Postgraduate students and two hundred Ph.D. Scholars drawn from all over India, NIT Trichy has a very mixed student community of the highest quality. NIT Trichy follows Continuous Assessment with Grade Point average based on relative grading (50% Continuous Assessment - 50% Semester Examinations).

Admission Process, Minimum Qualifications and Reservation

All students aspiring to get admitted to N.I.T must appear for All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE).

The candidate should have passed the qualifying Examination (i.e.) +2 level (class XII/Intermediate Examination or its equivalent).

50 % of the seats in N.I.T Trichy are reserved for Students from Tamilnadu. Rest 50% for students on All India basis.

Reservation Policy : OBC - 27%, SC - 15%, ST - 7.5%
