About : The History and Activities of NIT Rourkela
National Institute of Technology, Rourkela in Orissa. NIT Rourkela was established in 1961 under the able vision of the then Chief Minister of Orissa Biju Patnaik. Its foundation stone was laid by the then Prime Minister Of India Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru. NIT Rourkela was ranked as the best NIT in India by TEQIP for the year 2009. It is the 24th best engineering college in India.
The institute is managed by the Board of Governors of National Institute of Technology (Rourkela) Society and vested with significant degree of administrative and financial autonomy. The institute has been modernised by two foreign collaborative funding agencies: the Material theme in the Materials and Metallurgical Engineering department under Indo-UK. REC project, and the Computer Science and Electronics streams under World Bank cum Swiss Development Corporation IMPACT project.
The city of Rourkela came into prominence in the years 1954-55, with the decision of the government of India to set up the first public sector steel plant, Rourkela Steel Plant in this locality in collaboration with the then West Germany. The city is a huge metropolis connected with all parts of the country by railway and road. The campus of the institute is situated at the eastern end of Rourkela steel city, beyond Sector-1 over an area of 2.62 km˛ of land provided by the Government of Orissa. The courses are mostly residential on a full-time basis.
